Everyone is a user and creator of content and the internet is everywhere. Licensing is the process of getting and granting permission to use creative works. The Government-run Copyright Hub implemented within the Creative Licensing consultancy package ensures that unauthorised copying is reduced and it has automated the process of recording and processing rights licensing.

In the case of images reproduced in the wider media, Creative Licensing allow incomes to be generated from images that appear on Special Interest Websites, On-line Archives, Special Collections, Museum websites and Photographers stock websites.

Many of these sites contain images where the rights are held, frequently not by the managers of the websites and archives themselves, by others – such as commissioning editors and individual photographers. Acquiring the reproduction rights by parties can involve a great deal of non-productive time by the archives themselves to connect the enquirer to the rights-holder.

The issue of negotiating and paying for the final image and it’s delivery under licence which can also consume a lot of time when the amounts of money are relatively small.

Since it was established in December 2013, the Copyright Hub has worked in close partnership with the Digital Catapult to create a bigger marketplace for content creators, owners and licensors – and to develop the technical infrastructure that will make it easier for people and companies to license digital content for legitimate reuse.

Creative Licensing ensures that end-users do the ‘right’ thing by the owner of the image copyright by automatically connecting enquiries directly to the owners of the images. Lower-cost rights purchases, deliveries and arrangements are made automatically on-line – whilst higher-value image enquiries are put into direct contact with the rights-owner, allowing individual negotiations to take place.
