ExCeL London was the most complex venue in the history of the modern Olympic Games. To celebrate one year on from the 2012 Games, ExCeL London asked Equinox Partners to come up with some ideas...
We utilised the Olympic and Paralympic pictograms that symbolised the disciplines held within their halls, recognised the key officials involved and the four Gold medal winners who contributed to the success of the Games for Great Britain.
James Mark, Executive Director at ExCeL London:
Both Michael and Clare provided a first class service in the work they completed for ExCeL London.
We commissioned them to design and build a legacy scupture related to ExCeL's involvement with the Olympic Games and they did a tremendous job. Plenty of creative ideas and excellent implementation.
We are very happy with the results.
ExCeL Olympic Anniversary Wall
ExCeL Olympic Anniversary WallA lasting celebration – the twelve 1 metre square, waterjet-cut porcelain tiles combined with illuminated laminated glass and stainless steel creates major legacy for ExCeL London.
ExCeL London Handcastings
ExCeL London HandcastingsAs part of the interativity of the display, we included glassfibre handcastings from Lord Sebastian Coe, Boris Johnson and the four ExCeL Gold medal winners. Anthony Joshua (pictured), Jade Jones, Luke Campbell and Nicola Adams.
ExCeL London Wall Survey
ExCeL London Wall SurveyThe position of the final display was determined, but the curtain wall was of lightweight materials. To take the twelve 60kg pictograms, strengthening to the existing structure was required.
The Big Build #1

The Big Build #2
The Big Build #2The reinforcment was in. The cladding was in place and the wiring was completed. One of the hardest parts of the whole installation was mounting the 60kg panels onto their backing trays.
The Big Build #3
The Big Build #3The wooden carcase of the display console is cantilevered away from the wall, bolted to the same reinforcement channels as the pictogram panels.
Happy Clients! Our many thanks to James, Gemma and all the management at ExCeL London for having the faith in us – and the forebearance with all we achieved with this project.
