BICC Fibre Optic Cable Splicer

You will find telephone engineers hunched over such devices as this, welding together mile-long lengths of hair-thickness fibre-optic cable so that that it will stretch in one length from London to Manchester and can carry up to 88,000 phone calls simultaneously..

Supremely accurate, the microscope (with the flat screen TV monitor) allows the viewing of the two strands of glass, the polishing of their ends, the alignment and laser welding of the two, forming a perfect joint.
